Tell him "New year, new start. I'm sorry and think you are a nice person." If he is rude after that, you will have to accept that he is indeed an as*hole.

Okay, here's the deal. Well, first of all you need to find out if he's mad at you to begin with. And it depends on if he deserved to be called an Idiot. If he did, then explain to him that what he said or did etc.. was wrong. And if it was something he did wrong then maybe you shouldn't even apologize in the first place. Maybe he should be the one saying sorry. If not then apologize for calling him that and just tell him that you didn't mean what you said. Some question's answer themselves. Good Luck!

If he meant what he said when he called you that name, then maybe you just shouldn't bother with the guy. I mean, sure, calling him an idiot wasn't really a nice thing to do, but you know what they say, "when push comes to shove..."
If you really still want to talk to him, (though you didn't really say why, maybe you like him?) then just send him a quick little note maybe saying that you were wondering what he was up to or how things were going so far this year for him. If he replies, then great! If not, well... maybe you should just leave some things to rest.
Best of luck!

Just call him and say you think of him as a friend and you wanted to see how he was doing. It will be up to him to act like a decent human being or an a*hole!

Hey sweetie,
Have we gotten past the name calling yet? Are we ready to be more mature about the way we deal with one another yet? If so, forget about the past, forgive yourself for your shortcomings and ask the good lord above for guidance, courage, serenity and wisdom. Believe and TRUST in him. It will take time and lots of patience. I know this because I am going through a similar situation. It is not easy for me at all, because sometimes I am not very good at exercising my patients at all.
The things I am saying to you are from the heart and not meant to hurt you. Please think about what I am saying if you read any of this at all.

Ask if you can start over from scratch, and tell him you would like that opportunity because you dont want to be enemies with him.
