NOTE... newer crockpots heat hotter than older ones, unfortunately... some people were putting frozen meat/poultry into them, then getting sick from having insufficiently cooked food or allowing the bacteria to multiply too much. So the manufacturers just began making them hotter. That will change the times for many of the older recipes... so for example, many meats etc. shouldn't be cooked at that high a temp for longer than six hrs where 8 or more used to be advised.

Here's some info on what you can do to compensate:
...Experiment with shorter cooking times. Of course that eliminates some of the convenience of being able to set up the slowcooker in the morning and leaving it alone until you come home hungry at night.
One option around this is to use a timer. Some of the newer slow cookers come with a built-in timer, however you should also be able to buy one at a hardware or appliance store???.

As mentioned in the section above, always make sure your slowcooker is at least half filled. Especially if it is one of the newer cookers, that is already cooking hotter to begin with.

…You can crumple up aluminum foil balls and set several on the bottom of the crockpot. Put a whole chicken on top of the foil balls. This keeps the skin on the bottom of the chicken crisp - otherwise it sits in the juice and gets soggy.
…or wrap delicate chicken or big chunks of fish in foil to keep from drying out, especially if you're going to be home late.
