Who told you nature was "fair"? Nature is violent yet merciful; the male of the other pride probably killed that cub in one bite .... we humans are the only ones who know about torture.
Why must things be fair for you? Life isn't fair, death isn't fair, pimples on your face aren't fair. Get over it, it's not about "fair"

Compare the way nature was in the Bible in the first 3 chapters of Genesis...... "Beautiful, just the way God intended"....
Then compare nature after "Sin" entered the world in genesis chapter 3....
and finally compare nature the way it is now...to what God said nature will be like once "Sin" and its effect is removed....
Too lazy to look? allow me to help you out a bit...
Isaiah 11:6-9
The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea....
For your information.... God is not dead...he is very much alive...and the way that nature is today is in no way God's fault..it is the end result of man's disobedience...
But all things shall be restored in due time...
Revelation 21:1-8
21Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
‘See, the home* of God is among mortals.
He will dwell* with them;
they will be his peoples,*
and God himself will be with them;*
4he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.’
5 And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ 6Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. 7Those who conquer will inherit these things, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8But as for the cowardly, the faithless,* the polluted, the murderers, the fornicators, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death
The Good news is that you still have time to repent and be counted among them that will live to see this new heavan and earth....
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life...

You first off assume that what violates your sensibilities is unfair.
Just because the fallen world were we live has a violent brutish nature to it does not mean that God is unfair. Lions have to eat, too you know. This is just another twist on the "Evil exists so therefore God cannot" arguement, which I find fairly lacking, both in it's logic as well as from a theological perspective.

Nature being fair or unfair depends on the perspective.
To a the lion cub. Unfair.
To nature itself. Its not only fair, its a nessesity.
Wolves kill elk. They kill the weak elk - this keeps the heard thin and improves the genetics of the elk heard - only the weak elk get eaten.

Nature is completely fair, it kills all, indiscriminately. It also sustains all, indiscriminately.
