Does it depend on the gauge of wire? Or can I just pop out that breaker and add a bigger amp?

Breaker size is dependent on the gauge of the wire. The two most common wire sizes in your box are # 14 and # 12 The table of ampacity in the code book states that # 14 is rated for 20 amps. # 12 is rated for 25 amps. Here's where it gets tricky. You see, there's a fine print note that states that # 14 is to be breakerd at 15 amps and # 12 is to be breakerd at 20 amps. So you can change the breaker up as a home owner. I couldn't.

1- Code violation. Should you have a fire related to this modification, it could invalidate insurance coverage.

2- Moderate safety hazard. As some have said, the wire size determines the breaker size. Increase the breaker, increase fire risk. In the USA, 15 amp is used for 14 ga wire.

If you live in Venezuela, it's ok... 20A on 14 gauge is standard there.

You should never upsize your breaker without consulting an experienced electrician and analyzing your use. You can really hurt yourself/property by doing this
