For $50, I would definitely recommend Zone Alarm Security Suite. It's been my personal favorite over several years of testing.

It will take care of all your security needs. It is first and foremost a firewall, and the best in its class. It also has virus, spyware, and spam protection. Other features include identity theft protection, parental controls, and IM security.

John

EDIT: In regards to the previous answer, the Zone Alarm suite I recommended will be much more powerful than the free Zone Alarm. If you want to be sure that you are virus and hacker free, its better that you pay for your product. Like the saying goes, "You get what you pay for!". Test prove that AVG is not half as effective against viruses than paid products.

There is a company called Invisus Internet Security. They are the most comprhensive managed internet security on the market today. You get free unlimited live tech support with your subscription. And because they are the only ones that guarantee, you will also receive $25,000 in ID theft insurance through AIG with it. They can remove any and all viruses and spyware on your computer. Homeland Security uses them as well as Stanford University and many others. You can check them out before deciding on anything. Go to www.invisus.com or to www.myinvisusdirect.com/Elsa I am an internet security advocate with this company as well as a customer. Both of these pages have a lot of useful information for you on internet safety. If you need more information about this company you can email me through Yahoo Answers. Good luck!

I'm assuming you're using Windows XP, so:
Firewall: use ZoneAlarm, it's FREE!!! and it's great.

Spyware and Viruses: use AVG, it's FREE!! for the non-professional version.

Also donwload and use spybot, which is also free.

Don't forget to keep them up to date, and run a full system scan with AVG atleast a couple of times a month.
