If traveling by land as a U.S. Citizen, then no, you do not, until 2008 at least.

Currently you need a photo ID and a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship in order to go to Canada, and moreso to get back into the U.S.

However, it is a good idea to get a passport and have one.
Here is how to do that:

If flying by air after January 23, 2007 you will need a passport. After Jan 1st, 2008 you will either need a passport or a passcard.

Hopefully, all you will need is a passcard for land and sea except for cruises. This is supposed to be cheaper than passports.

If you work their. You will still be able to use what you have used in the past without any further ID.

It depends if you are traveling from the US to Canada via air you will need a passport after the 23rd of this month. If you will traveling from the US to Canada via ground transportation the old regulations are still in place and will be until at least January of 2008. If you visit the Customs and Border Patrol, www.cbp.org they have all of the new regulations listed on their website.

Hope this helps and have a great trip!
