He thought the paperwork was completed and come to find 2 1/2 yrs later - he's still married. Why did they let us apply for a marriage license to begin with if his divorce wasn't final? What happens now- would we get charged for medical fraud and tax fraud since we were never technically married? Could he get in trouble with the law? Him&I had probs before I discovered this and I uncovered this info during the research of my own divorce!

You were innocent in this, he would be the one to get the fines if any incurred. You can probably sue him for what happened.
"He thought the paperwork was completed" Uh... Sounds fishy and I'd go into this with the impression that he may have lied to you about that. Its just too big of a thing for someone to just assume they are done with after some paperwork is filed.

There could be legal issues, but since he didn't realize he was still married, they won't press that to much. As for the marriage license - in most cases, when you apply for one, they just want you id. They can't possible check everyone's previous history because they could have been married in any state or any number of countries.

It was your husband's obligation to be sure he was not married not the governments. The least of problems for your husband is medical fraud. The IRS will change your taxes so it is better to refile your taxes for the years you were married. It is illegal to be married to 2 people, so yes Mr. Lawman could come knocking on his door. Good luck & dump him fast - you deserve better since he is at least an idiot if not a criminal.

I guess the good thing is you were never married to him and you can even sue his but for lying.
