No, there are no dogs today who have strong enough backs to allow even a small child to ride them without harming the dog. Much as we joke about it with some dogs.

By the way, that is why you read about chariots in history. It wasn't for the first few thousand years of riding horses that we bred horses strong enough to carry an armed and armoured warrior (they weigh considerably more than a man alone) in battle and be able to take the shock force of driving a lance into someone or the force of hammering a sword down into someone. About 500 BC we had them and soon developed the stirrup, then chariots had seen their day and were gradually replaced. Dogs have a LONG way to go before they are that strong.

No.

A properly sized breed wearing a harness designed for pulling could pull an adult on a small sled, but its recomended you train the dog and use a breed made for pulling. A collar will not evenly distribute the weight and can crush the windpipe, a harness that is not made for pulling could break or cause sores and pinched nerves.

Even the weight of a small child can cause back injuries to humans, so imagine what would happen to a poor dog?

No- they're not big enough and won't carry a grown person. I have seen pictures of a monkey riding on the back of a dog, with the dog enjoying the company. Dogs are very strong and have amazing stamina and hence are used in some places to pull loads, like sledges or small carts.

My 1 1/2 year old thinks so, but as we tell him, "NO, you can't ride on the dog, you will hurt her and make her cry."

no you can seriously damage their backs and joints. You can however use them to pull a cart....a great dane can pull a small child in a cart easily or buy huskies and get a sled! But never sit on dogs you will end up bitten and in jail for cruelty to the animal!

I rode my dog when i as five once or twice, which was a dumb thing to do as it can damage joints and there back. It could also cause them long term damage and i'll bet they wouldn't live very long, but because i only did it once or twice and i was small it made no difference.

Yes, I used to ride dogs when I was younger.
Unfortunatly there was an Australian in the next field that saw me and he and his b*tch sheep took exception and called animal welfare.
When they arrived we were love locked as rover had clenched his buttocks.
Now I only ride sheep.
