Does running in place burn just as much calories as regular running... does running in place even burn off fat?

Running on same spot is NOT the same as real running.

The reason is there is a difference in the WORK done, it covers ZERO distance, ie horizontal work is none, the vertical work done is more or less the same as real running, little more if your knees are high.

Check this out:

A person who weighs 80kg and runs for 30min at a speed of 10mph burns 672 Kcal, while the same person does fast dancing burns 189 Kcal (but at least the person moves around not stays)

I think when you running in place, you use your calves more.
When you run I think your leg muscles play a bigger role.
