From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

III. The Effects of Confirmation

1302 It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.

1303 From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:
- it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!";
- it unites us more firmly to Christ;
- it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
- it renders our bond with the Church more perfect;
- it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross:

Recall then that you have received the spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear in God's presence. Guard what you have received. God the Father has marked you with his sign; Christ the Lord has confirmed you and has placed his pledge, the Spirit, in your hearts.

1304 Like Baptism which it completes, Confirmation is given only once, for it too imprints on the soul an indelible spiritual mark, the "character," which is the sign that Jesus Christ has marked a Christian with the seal of his Spirit by clothing him with power from on high so that he may be his witness.

1305 This "character" perfects the common priesthood of the faithful, received in Baptism, and "the confirmed person receives the power to profess faith in Christ publicly and as it were officially (quasi ex officio)."

Congratuations!!

Most simply put, Confirmation is the sacrament where you receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit - strength, wisdom, courage, knowledge, understanding, reverance, and wonder & awe at/in God's presence. These gifts are spritual ones, strength in life and faith from the Holy Spirit. It was originally the sacrament that was to immediately follow baptism. In fact, when you go to Easter Vigil mass, you will see that those being initiated are baptized and then confirmed and THEN receive Eucharist.

People used to say that Confirmation was when a teen got to stand up and say "yeah, I wanna be Catholic," kind of like a rite of passage. That isn't it at all - you've been Catholic since you were baptized.

What are the advantages? Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation for the Church. Like I said, you already are Catholic, but this brings you most fully into the community. It used to be that you couldn't get married in the Catholic church unless you were confirmed. That isn't true anymore, but some priests might be sticklers on this. But the greatest advantage to receiving Confirmation is to allow yourself to accept this loving gift of God. What you do with it is all up to you.

Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments, namely Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony, and Holy Orders.

Confirmation is one of the three sacraments of initiation, namely Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. A person who has received all three of these sacraments is considered a fully initiated Catholic.

The priest or bishop lays their hands upon the person receiving Confirmation, the priest or bishop says, "Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit," the person says, "Amen," and then they are anointed with holy oil (just like King David).

Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:
- it roots us more deeply in the divine childhood which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!"
- it unites us more firmly to Christ;
- it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
- it renders our bond with the Church more perfect
- it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross

A fully initiated Catholic can be:
+ A godparent
+ A Confirmation sponsor
+ A lector who reads scripture at Mass
+ An extraordinary minister of the Eucharist
. + At Mass
. + To the sick
+ A Sacristan
+ A Cantor
+ And many other ministries

With love in Christ.

Confirmation- A sacrament in which the Holy Ghost is given to those already baptized in order to make them strong and perfect Christians and soldiers of Jesus Christ.

It has been variously designated: bebaiosis or confirmatio, a making fast or sure; teleiosis or consummatio, a perfecting or completing, as expressing its relation to baptism. With reference to its effect it is the "Sacrament of the Holy Ghost", the "Sacrament of the Seal" (signaculum, sigillum, sphragis). From the external rite it is known as the "imposition of hands" (epithesis cheiron), or as "anointing with chrism" (unctio, chrismatio, chrisma, myron). The names at present in use are, for the Western Church, confirmatio, and for the Greek, to myron.
