It depends how much you want to study and what your goal is.

I was a "Religion" major in college and studied courses in "religions"(pl), church history, a few courses in theology, Classical and Ancient Greek and Latin.

But it wasn't until post-graduate work that I really got to sfudy the Scripture. The three years there was spent on many peripheral church studies but we did pretty much read the whole New Testament in the original Koine Greek and the whole Old Testament, but without translating from the Hebrew.

If you are interested in being a pastor/teacher, it can be a lot of fun just learning about God and His word...and then teaching about God's love and power in their lives to others.

Dude, you are making plenty of well features. The truly predicament within the argument is that being a Christian calls for 2 matters: religion and works. However, a significant aspect of being a Christian is that Christians are human, and people sin - at all times, willingly. That is the 3rd aspect of the argument that demands to be concerned earlier than we will be able to give an explanation for the entire mess. Let's begin on the starting: being a Christian signifies that a man or woman has religion within the Christian God and Jesus because the savior. All you want do is a think and, in a single feel of the phrase, you're a Christian. The so much lucid connection with this comes from Ephesians two:eight, to whit: "For through grace you have got been stored via religion, and that no longer of yourselves; it's the present of God,..." It is your religion that makes you a Christian, however no longer what I name a whole Christian. To be thoroughly Christian calls for greater than religion. Faith with out works (doing well stuff) is referred to as in scripture "useless religion." Thus, precise Christianity is each a religion and a train. For extra in this, see James two:14-26. The so much lucid line is James two:26, to whit "For because the frame with out the spirit is useless, so religion with out works is useless additionally." The 3rd aspect of the argument is that folks sin at all times. There aren't any gradations of sin: gluttony is a sin, homicide is a sin, calling anybody a jerkwad is a sin. However, God/Jesus receive that we're sinners and love us besides. (BTW, God loves each person, no longer simply the believers.) Since folks are so extraordinarily imperfect, it turns into more difficult to outline hypocrisy. Since every body are imperfect sinners, Christians can nonetheless be Christians if they've religion and perform a little works. In my humble (ha!) opinion hypocrisy is available in whilst folks profess that being a Christian makes them awesome to others OR after they say that they act in a "Christian system" however disobey the 2 finest commandments. Per Jesus, the 2 finest commandments are defined in Matthew 22:36-39, to whit: 36 “Teacher, that's the excellent commandment within the regulation?” 37 Jesus mentioned to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with your entire center, with your entire soul, and with your entire brain.’ 38 This is the primary and excellent commandment. 39 And the moment is love it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as your self.’ So, you'll be a Christian when you think and perform a little works. Where folks move flawed (once more, IMHO) is whilst they aren't loving. Being loving is likened to the finest commandment, loving God. So, I think that jerkwads can nonetheless be Christians, they only pass over the largest factor, the factor on which the entire Law and the entire prophets cling: you gotta have love. This is a significant quandary inside the church and it quite ticks me off. There is _no_ room for judging others as sinners. Jesus makes this very transparent a number of instances, so much specifically whilst He tells a crowd that the ones amongst them who're with out sin must stone the prostitute to dying, and whilst He tells folks not to factor out their neighbor's sins whilst their possess sins are even higher. (It's the textual content approximately no longer stating the speck to your neighbor's eye if you have a plank to your possess.) So, if this does not earn me a BA, I will curse you just like the sinner I am. Well, no longer quite, however I wish it is helping.
