You don't learn from the movies. What you hear there is sometimes very bastardized words(in otherwords said incorrectly with emphasis on wrong syllable) that a German doesn't even know what is being said. Kinda like cockney or australian English.
You can find German teaching programs on the net for free, where you can hear it spoken and see it written. I've looked into it myself because I live in a family whose parents is Germam/Polish.......I understand the words being spoken but I have difficulty making sentences or reading it. So I believe the programs will help me if I go at it in ernest. Definitely gotta be better than French.

There's a really good site from Radio Deutsche Welle

http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,1595,2548,00.html

It's a site with High Quality MP3 recordings and PDF documents of written work to learn the written language. There are several levels from Beginner to Professional. The courses are far from boring, being based around a cute story about a man who's constant companion is an invisible imp. And best of all, it's free.

have fun.

there's a German band referred to as, "Die Toten Hosen", yet they are like a comfortable rock band. The humorous problem is, in Germany American media is really popular, yet they have countless cool stuff of their own. as an party a German citadel named "Neuschwanstein", which galvanized Cinderella. and countless the Brother's Grimm thoughts are German in beginning.

Try the BBC website - http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/german/index.shtml, also
http://german.about.com/

You can also get CDs or DVDs in bookshops or from Amazon. Or you could watch German TV on cable/satellite, as I think they have some programmes in English or simple German. Euronews or Deutsche on Telewest cable in UK might be useful.
