1- No, Paxil will get most people pretty well stoned. A mood-altering drug will alter the mood of almost everyone. Same with smoking dope or doing crack. It takes about 2 weeks to CAUSE a chemical imbalance in the brain with those types of drugs.
2. The body reacts to traumatic events with the "fight or flight" response, which is *not* caused by the brain but by the adrenal glands. If the adrenal glands become exhausted due to the traumatic event's lingering repercussions, or a very stressful lifestyle, you develop a hormone imbalance, which causes anxiety, depression, heart palpitations, nervousness, depression, and can even lead a person to develop phobias like agoraphobia.

If you were given drugs for a brain chemical imbalance, what tests did they run to determine you had an imbalance? Or did a doctor just "decide" you needed drugs without any blood or saliva tests?

I was on Paxil at one time,, but it quit working for me. I know of someone that is on Paxil for the same reason as you are, anxiety disorder.
Yes, a chemical imbalance can be triggered by a traumatic event in your life. It is because of the way the brain processes these kinds of things, causing a chemical imbalance.
I am bipolar, born bipolar. But it didn't raise its ugly head until I was about 50; because of the degree of depression I was having. It actually had as a teen, but no one recognized it then.
