I can't promise 300 words, but I can give you my point of view regarding those of religious orders in the Roman Catholic Church.

Brothers, Sisters, Monks all gain their title by devoting their lives to God in joining a religious order. Their role and importance varies by the order - some are missionaries, some are educators, some are healers (well, used to be), some serve the poor, and some devote their lives to prayer and reflection.

Why do we need priests? (or bishops, arch-bishops, etc) TThat can be a more touchy subject for many people, but to me the answer is fairly simple. The Roman Catholic Church has a structure and the priests are part of the structural leadership. It all boils down to having "shepherds for the flock," which is one of the official job "duties" of bishops. Could the structure be maintained if staffed by the laity? I believe it could, and in some churches, the administration is handled by someone other than the pastor or priest assigned to the church.

Priest do have special duties conferred with ordination, most notably, administering the sacraments. Therein lies their greatest role and importance. (In my opinion, at least.)

Priests are needed to consecrate the bread and wine so they become the Body and Blood of Christ (Luke 22: 19)and to administer the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the forgiveness of sins (John 20: 21-23).

Sisters and brothers are women and men who have devoted their lives to God by serving others. Sisters and brothers do this in their roles as teachers, lawyers, nurses, and other secular professions.

Being a Priest, or Brother or Sister is important to those who belong to churches that have the category of ministers and those who are not necessary ordained (even though some are) who dedicate their life's by taken vows to be celibate, live out their life in poverty and be obedient to their bishop in regards to what they want of them. I myself am an Episcopal Solitary Franciscan who has made a long journey to accepting God/s call for me to live as a Brother or another term would be a Monk. I am very happy to finally come to allow my Bishop to accept my Life vows as a solitary Franciscan (one who does not live in community with other Franciscan Brothers). To the people who live out these vocation most of them minister in their capacity to those who God has ordained for them to minister too. One of the ways you can tell if someone who is a person who is a Priest, or Bother or Sister who is very happy with that life is the joy that is manifested by them in their actions.

Yes, we need them but not as they are named by the RCChurch. I believe strongly in the priesthood of all believers and that all people who have been born again are brothers and sisters in Christ.

1 Peter 2:4-5

4 As you come to him, the living Stone-rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him- 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
(from New International Version)

Matt 12:46-50
47 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you."

48 He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."

They are the bureaucracy created by the corrupt Catholic church to rip-off the faithful idiots. They are definitely important...for the continuation of the scam, and enrichment of the Vatican.
