A little over a year ago I had been asleep on the couch when a fire broke out in my apartment(When I fell asleep there was no indication that anything was wrong / no sign of fire or smoke). My housemate had left a candle burning next to her curtains. The curtains caught on fire. As I was asleep the house filled with smoke so thick that you couldnt see you're hands in front of you. The only way I woke up and got out of my burning apartment was my female Siameese cat named Allie that I had just rescued from an abusive owner 2 weeks prior to the fire(I convinced the person to give up the cat to me since they obviously could not take care of it))woke me up by licking my eyelids. I woke up to this harsh sand paper-like feeling on my eyelids, I opened my eyes and it was Allie. I grabbed her and got out of the Apt. I dont know if she knew she was saving my and her life but she did.

The best of cats come from the shelters! You are also saving a life, which always makes you feel good. I enjoy the beauty of the purebred cats, but I will always adopt from shelters. It sounds like you adopted an older cat since she has gone a long time without being adopted. People generally go for the kittens which are tiny, cute and fuzzy, while the older cats get overlooked.
When I adopted Mollie I was recovering from the sudden death of the family cat, and I went to the shelter to visit with the cats. That day there were mostly kittens, so I went to "visiting". In the middle there was this tiny underweight tortiseshell kitten, who was so scared and intimidated by all the sounds and other cats that she wasn't eating much. I had never seen that color before, so I took her out of her cage after petting her for a few minutes. I sat in the chair provided and talked with my mother while petting the little one. Soon she began purring loudly and eventually fell asleep on my chest. She liked to cuddle up and just go to sleep. I decided that she was my cat at that point. My brother noted that she was "as small as a molecule", and nicknamed her moleceule. The name stuck, but the name was shortened to Mollie. There was a waiting period because the shelter arranged for her to get all of her shots, a checkup, and to be spayed. I was beside myself with excitment to get her home with me so we could cuddle up some more.
I have a mild allergy to cats (along with many others) but it is tolerable at home. Being in a shelter for a portion of a day was different, and I was sneezing my head off with eyes so watery that I could barely see. However, I had an ear to ear grin on my face because I really enjoyed my visit to the animal shelter, and wanted my little furry baby to come home with me.
There are volunteer positions at my local shelter (no kill a requirement for me to volunteer) available for cat cuddlers. You socialize with the cats, and thats about it. Once I get some more time, I'm going for it! I'll just have to remember to take a clarinex before I go.
As a matter of fact, 10 years later, Mollie is sleeping next to me as I type.
Congratulations for your newest addition to the family, and may you have many fun-filled years together.

I too an a rescue cat parent, 4 years ago I went to the local shelter with a friend who wanted a new kitten, I myself had never been much of a cat person having only owned dogs my whole life. I sat down in the kitten room while my friend was playing with all the kittens, suddenly i felt a tug on my pant leg and I looked down and this gorgeous white kitten with one blue eye, one green eye and 3 gray strips on the top of her head was climbing up my leg. She got onto my lap and just looked at me, then proceded to climb my shirt to my shoulder where she hopped onto my head and fell asleep.... I just let her sit there and I laughed. The girl at the shelter came in the room and just busted out laughing when she saw my perdicerment. She asked me if I was ready to be a mommy, well I couldn't think of a good reason to say no.... soooo I filled out all the adoption paperwork then waited the 3 longest days of my life to find out if I was approved or not, when I got the call that I had been approved to have the kitten I drove out to the shelter to see my new baby lol, They made me wait another 2 weeks to take her home as she had been spayed that day and hadn't had all her shots yet, but when I finally got her home It was the happiest I had ever been... its 4 years later, and shes still the light of my life, always waiting for me to get home from work, and giving me an honest oppinion about the men I date... and she has never had a problem with the other pets I foster, or that our roommates own... call me crazy, but shes my baby and I love her more than life itself.

Good on you!!!!
I don't have a cat but I adopted a Lhasa Apso X Years ago from the RSPCA (Australia). She was used as a puppy breeding machine and kept in a cage for 6 years with no flea control and they never treated her ears and eyes as a result she had extremely bad skin, dry eye and her ears were sooo infected that she had gone deaf.
The RSPCA took her and hundreds of other dogs in the same condition off these people and prosecuted them. i adopted my "Honey" and she is now 13 yrs old, deaf but her eyes are good and skin looks fantastic however her teeth are worn down from chewing herself and the bars of her cage!
We have tried to give her the best life possible and hope that she forgets those bad days!

First of all, good for you! And congrats! I adopted my beautiful Blue-point Siamese from the Humane Society. It gives you a certain satisfaction to know that you have given an animal a better life and a chance to live a long healthy life. Have fun!

The cat I currently have, Tika, I adopted her from a county animal shelter. I like tortoiseshell-colored cats and I always wanted one. I found one, that's my Tika..actually, she was not shy about interacting with me from the start. That she 'picked' me to be her human, that's what made me happy. And yes, she probably would have been euthanized had she not been adopted. That was in 1998..she'll be nine years old this May.

Good for you! And good for your new kitty!
Both of my cats are rescues.
We adopted Fenris two years ago. The rescue group inspired me to start volunteering. I started fostering rescued cats - helping to make them more adoptable. I took in the particularly shy and the particularly mean ones, usually. It was amazing to see how well they turned out, and it felt great to help find them their forever homes.
I took in one foster kitten on the spur of the moment - someone just came into Petsmart and gave him up. I took him home, set him down, and told Fenris to "find his kitty." He did, and they have been best buds ever since. They are about a year apart in age. They snuggle, run, play, and wrestle together. Needless to say, Gizmo didn't stay a "foster" for long. I adopted him, too!

I adopted a little Russian Blue kitten two years ago.
He fit in the palm of my hand and was hand raised, since he was found in a park abandoned with unknown circumstances.
He's now a massive ball of muscle and energy. He's my buddy. He never had a real mommy to tell him certain things are mean (like attacking me out of nowhere) but we still manage.
