Why do monks need to have sex?

The answer is NO.....

They left the lay life and put on robes in search of enlightenment....so sex and other desires are definitely out of the way.

Yes they do, if their lucky.

I have known monks and they had sex. In Soto Zen, and other sects, the concern is being too attached to sex (or anything else for that matter). Running after sex is a problem.

Sex is a great way to be intimate with someone you love. There's no need to restrain from sex. Maybe the Buddha didn't have sex, but were not at that point yet. You have to be true to yourself. You don't need anyone to tell you what's right. That's something the Buddha taught, by example.
