Just talk to her as if she was away somewhere else (college). Try and keep the conversation as normal as possible. Tell her what is going on with her family and friends. Try and stay away from bad news....she will love to hear from you. Can I suggest a care package to go along with that letter.
As for an opening line...try Hey Hero, or Hey Hardcore....that will make her smile.
