gin and tonic
vodka and soda
martini (I would probably go with either one of these) or a cosmopolitan
BTW - late 40's - 50's is not that old!:( If she has money and is this age - she will have a taste for things like a martini or a cosmopolitan - made with very good alcohol.

As a former bartender and restraunter I could say that customer will order a Sherry. But we do not serve Sherry, then she would order an Irish Coffee, but we do not have any Whiskey, she reaches into her elegant bag , retrieves a half pint of Canadian Club or Seagrams Seven and says , with ladylike dignity, now may I have my order? or somethin like that. A true alcoholic is never out without a drink that can be had at a moments notice.

Non alcoholic : Arnold Palmer ( Ice tea / Lemonade )
Old Fashioned would be a drink from the past. However, if your character is an alcoholic then probably a martini.

Scotch on the rocks, an old fashion,a manhattan, a side car or a pink squirrel. Most drunks don't drink fru-fru drinks like a pink squirrel. I'd go with scotch on the rocks or an old fashion.

Well, I am in that demographic... hmnn, I think I might order a rum and coke at a diner, because I would doubt the bartending capabilities there and keep it simple for the staff-
