Are you holding down the control button to select them all? If so when you move them even the slightest little bit it copies them. Have you deleted each one by just hitting the delete button when highlighted?

Do a search for a free "file shredder" You are right that the files are still there. As someone else said, you cannot access them by ordinary means inside the OS, but advanced users and the FBI can. So, what the shredder does is erases over the file with random 0s and 1s. If you didn't do this, the delete button just erases the path to the file, and then tells the computer that space is free. But the info is still there. You will need to have the location of these files (the actual file) to use the shredder. If not, when you download more info/pics in the future, they will overwrite old files. But if the pictures weren't Bad, then you shouldn't have a problem.

This is extreamly abnormal behavior, as you pointed out yourself. I strongly suggest first doing a full virus and other malware scan on your entire system. I am not saying you have a virus or malware, but this is the sort of malicious actions a virus could carry out, instructing the copying of anything you delete via the delete action. If it turns out not to be a virus, then I next suggest you contact your computer manufacturer and see if the technical department can fix this error for you. If you don't wish to contact the manufacturer, or if they tell you your computer is out of warranty, then the next best option is to call in a computer expert, such as those at GeeksRUs or some other computer repair shop. I do suggest avoiding the large box computer retailer repair shops as they tend to not really be the best in the field, often do not do a good job, and will offer to just wipe your drive and reformatt then re-install the OS, as for them it is the simplist and easiest option. It is not for you as you would lose a lot of important data if you could not, for some reason, backup it all to a portable drive such as a zip drive or a removable hard drive of some sort. As it is you don't want all of those copies, but if you back it up, get the problem solved, you can then restore only those files you wish to keep and get rid of the rest.
I have never heard of this problem before. However, I am also not an expert, only a moderately educated computer administrator. I work on my own private home and office networked computers, and learn new stuff every day. However, with that said, this does sound like it is possibly virus activity.
I wish I had more to offer you at this time, as this is very weird behavior, but I don't so sorry about that. I do suggest you avoid trying to delete anything further until after you scan, and then take it to the Geek Squad, or have them come to your home whichever is most convienant for you, if you live in an area with the option to do so. I know the Geek Squad will not only come out, but actually teach you how to fix whatever went wrong so you can be more able to address such issues in the futrue.
I wish you the best and a great day, as far as that is possible with your computer on the blink. ;-)

Suggest you go into Safe Mode and run your antivirus program.
Turn your PC on and quickly press and hold down the F8 key until you see a black screen with white font - it will be a DOS menu. Select Safe Mode. Then Start, Programs, and run your AV program.
When finished, restart. Your icons will probably be messed up. Just drag them back into place.

You probably have some weird virus or worm that is doing this. Try to get a program that locates and kills viruses. Then try to delete the extra stuff.

It's a virus... It repeats its programming... Which that one is to latch onto a specific file and make copies and more copies of it... I don't think there is a way to get rid of that without going to symantec and having them scan your computer for free online...
