If someone is desperate to be slim and they eat very healthily but due to painful knee joints can't exercise (except swimming and walking) - they walk 30 minutes a day and have been for over a year, they've barely lost any weight, feeling very disheartened. What do you do?!

are you sure you are eating at healthy as you can? i myself am on a diet and whenever i start to feel like it's never going to work i sit down and seriously ask myself what i am eating and just how healthy is it? i also started doing different low impact exercises. the key is definatly to get your heart rate up to boost your metabolism and start losing weight. have you tried palaties or yoga? i even tried my friend's striptease workout videos by caramen electra lol and to my amazement that worked for me on top of eating right and walking. its a slow process yes,but don't lose heart. if you really feel like nothing is working have you tried talking to your doctor about what you could be doing and if they have any sugestions for you.

You should be able to use an elliptical runner, that is what I use.

If you are doing everything else right, increase the walking (though that can be hard on the knees). Use the elliptical runner and walk for 30 minutes every day.

Also start lifting weights. Muscles burns calories. If you are limited on leg exercises, you are still do back, abs, upper body. That will help.

I would absolutley recommend a weight training program. Women often think that weight are harmful to thier overall weightloss goals. They say " I dont want to look muscular" Weight traing burns lots of calories. Low weight and high repetitions will not bulk you up rather tone and slim you out!
Good Luck

How about the machine, the Gizelle?? It moves your legs back and forth like cross country skiing... keeps your knees straight but gets your heartrate moving. In order to get the weightloss your friend is looking for, he or she is going to have to step up the aerobics a bit. Gizelle's start at about $100 and can go up to $300.

well if this person is a member of a gym there are plenty of exercise machines that will not bother there knees. for instance, eliptical machines, and gliders. maybe break down your diet and talk to a pro who can help this person and maybe there diet is just way off. just because you may see it on tv or someone tells you it worked for them doesnt mean it will work for everyone. a diet and exercise program must be specific to that person and his/her lifestyle, needs, and many different equations.
