Why do people want low maintenance when it comes to pets?

I mean it's a living breathing creature....that means responsibility. No cutting corners.

Should have specified "dog'. No dog is low maintenance no matter what breed it is. All dogs need exercise and walks, play time and vet visits, brushing (except maybe the Chinese Crested) training and all that other good stuff.

So my point....there is NO low-maintenance dog.

People are lazy. Brine shrimp (also called sea monkeys) are pretty low-maintenance.

The reason is because they are lazy and really do not want to be bothered with the daily upkeep of a pet but how would they be able to look cool and follow the new fads like some of the actors and actresses (you know like Paris Hilton). A stuffed animal is the only animal that should be available to those seeking a low maintenance pet.
Personally I would love to see the popularity of the pet rock or Chia pet surge.

Some people, the elderly in particular, would like the companionship of a pet, but aren't able to provide professional grooming due to lack of money or transportation. So they would probably prefer a 'low-maintenance' pet.
People who work long hours all day would probably prefer cats, because they can use a litterbox, instead of a dog that will need to be walked. That would be considered lower maintenance too.

Its not necessarily a bad thing, and I don't think its an oxymoron. People still love and care very much for their low maintenance pets as they do high-maintenance ones.

In all fairness, I would rather a person admit up front they want a dog that needs less grooming, then buy one that needs a lot and not do it. I have Saints and they only need a good comb and a brush once a day. However, many of my friends and family say they wouldn't own them because of the hair and drool. Just about ten minutes ago my dog got a drink of water and gave his head a good shake. There is now a line of drool hanging from my ceiling fan. To us its no big deal, it cleans up. My sister on the other hand would be puking. Each breed comes with its own set of needs and people are wise to look for what fits their lifestyle. At the very least they are making some sort of planning rather than impulse buys.

People are lazy at times. Not to mention pet's don't have to go to work or school. People do, however. In the long run, it would always be for the best interest of the pet being low maitenance if someone is not always there to take care of the poor creature.

I guess there's no other way to put the question other then to ask if the pet is low maintenance or not. After all, a fish is considered low maintenance compared to a large playful puppy, correct?

I think peoples goal is to have a pet that provides max fun at a minimum of work. I love my cats, not only because of the amazing personality they possess, but also because they are fairly self-sufficient. But, then, most of my pets are. (4 ferrets, 6 mice, and 2 cats) Why would anyone want high maintenance? Just because people ACCEPT the fact that many pets are high maintenance, doesn't mean that they like to have to do all of that maintenance.

Yes, but just like people, some pets are higher maintenance then others. I can leave a bunny alone for a day, but wouldn't a dog.

maybe they have kids and the kids come first not the dog its nice to have pets but if they need a lot of work all the time and they don't have. its all about the persons life style. like if they live alone but don't want to so they get a pet so they are not so lonely any more

Cats area low maintenance, in my opinion.

They're like having a room mate... More or less independant, but sometimes you need to clean up after them. And they're always there when you need them.

People want easy pets because they like the company and companionship. It's like wanting a low maintenance boyfriend/girlfriend. Fun to have around but not always nagging.

You're right. There really aren't too many low maintenance pets. I guess the primary reason one would want a low maintenance pet is because they are unwilling or unable to give a lot of care to the animal.

Sure -
But I don't think they are saying that they are going to neglect their dogs.
I do however understand what you mean. It takes just as much effort to love and take care of a small dog as it does a large breed. Infact - People should really not get a dog unless they can:
Give is one and a half hours exercise everyday - two hours if possible.
Give is the proper food, shelter and water that it requires.
Give it love.
Give it limitations.
Also be able to pay for pet insurance.
