The vet has said he thinks it is a stroke, he has given our dog some vitamins, anti-inflammatry drugs and has told us to monitior him overnight. Then he is to have a check-up again tomorrow. Fingers-crossed.

I'm not a vet & you didn't give a breed but... best advice...go see yours. 14 is old for any breed and it sounds like its time is coming to a close. You can try to keep him warm and comfortable or go to a vet and see if anything can be done or should you let him peacefully be put down. Hard decision, I know. One of my 'girls' had to go to cancer. She died peacefully in my arms at the vet when her pain could no longer be controlled. I'm sorry for you and your pet. This is a painful choice. Be comforted, there is a special place for our beloved pets.

Please call the vet immediately.

I'm sorry your dog had a stroke. The good news is that many dogs live for several years after having strokes. My sister in laws dog had one about 3 years ago. Aside from the side of his face being paralyzed, he is perfectly fine and happy. Just follow the vets instructions and give him lots of love, and hopefully he'll bounce right back!

Check his eyes. If they are moving from side to side very quickly then he is having a kind of stroke. Don't panic - these symptons pass within hours and the dog will more than likely fully recover. If it is this then basically he can't get up or move about because everything is spinning around him. It's very alarming, but it will pass. If this is the case then try and keep him quiet and in the dark and make sure he has access to water - even if you have to spoon feed it to him.
Keep us informed!

If you can see a vet tonight. If not keep him warm and quiet overnight and see a vet tomorrow, he is getting on in years and any slight illness should be attended to asap.

It sounds to us like he may have had a mini-stroke and/or is going into shock.
A pet may be going into shock if you notice any of the following signs:
• depression
• pale gums
• weak pulse
• rapid heart rate (early on) or slow heart rate (advanced)
• cold extremities
• panting (early on) or slow deep breathing (advanced)
Wrap him in blankets, get his body warmed up, and get him to a vet ASAP.

I don't want to worry you, but it sounds like your dog has lost the use off this back legs (off hind legs). dogs sometime tend to lose the feeling and control in their back legs. It can be caused by many things, slipped disc, is the main or trauma but also virus can cause this. it is distressing to the animal so there reactions is to pant and they don't really want to eat. I would try to keep your as happy as possible and speak to your vet asap

Oh dear...maybe renal failure or some kind of heart problem. I'm so sorry. Hopefully the vet will be able to make his remaining time more comfortable.

Aww, so sad. My dog is becoming of old age also, but is doing fine. Maybe you could take it to the vet but I'm sure you wouldn't want to here what they may have to say.
