My mom's friend is giving away her GROWN Bulldogs. My fiance heard about it and is dying to get one. We are planning on getting the female if we get one. The only thing that bothers me is that it's already grown, I have never taken a grown dog before, I have always got my dogs as pups. We have a 7 and 8 year old boys and I'm pregnant. We don't have any other dogs. Will this dog take to my children well? What kind of dog (in general) can I expect. The lady says the dog has a good temperment but then why is she giving it away?

"The bulldog's disposition should be equable and kind, resolute and courageous (not vicious or aggressive), and demeanor should be pacific and dignified. These attributes should be countenanced by the expression and behavior."
Now the above is a bulldog that meets AKC standards and depending on how it was raised from your mom's friend will reflect on it's current disposition. You should yahoo or google "bulldog" and read up on the breed and also meet the dog and then also have the dog meet your children before you just go ahead a take her in. Also keep in mind that if you meet on their turf, they may act differently when at your house and also act differently when the two are seperated since dogs are pack animals and she has lived with the male for all these years.
I would suggest taking the dog on a walk since outside the house will be neutral territory and see how she reacts to you. The walk is the best way for a dog to put their trust and leadership in you.
As far as why she is giving them away, there are so many reasons I can't even guess as to what she is thinking but even if a dog has good temperment they are still a lot of work especially with two dogs. I have 3 dogs and 2 are still puppies at a year old but their loyalty and unconditional love is worth all the hard work.
Good luck to you and I hope it works out.

It depends on the dog! all dogs have individual personalities just like people. find out all the information about why she is giving them away. there could be several reasons like destructive behaviour, aggressive towards other dogs etc etc. however if the dog did turn nasty then it would end in a hospital visit because their jaws are so strong and they dont lt go. in my experience (i work at a kennels and have worked with about 5 bulldogs) they are a great breed, they are loving and willing to accept anyone. but again i must stress that it is down to the individual dog. ask if you can take them for a walk, spend a little time with them otherwise you might end up doing something you may regret.

I would definately do your research before making this committment. Ask this lady directly why she is no longer able to keep her beloved pets. As far as I know, Bulldogs are wonderful low key pets. They are affectionate and require much less activity than other breeds. Do some internet research into the breed, there's a ton of info out there and it's at your fingertips. Good luck.

These dogs can try to be dominant and due to there fighting history can be a challenge to handle.
They can either be very lazy or very energetic.
They are loyal and loving dogs.
Will protect the home.
They sometimes do not like to go for walks. This is a must to keep them in shape. You must ensure that they go on regular walks. They fart and drool.
Personally - I would own one. I just think they look great and although they don't look hard believe me they are!

She will probably be a loving dog if she has never been mistreated.
