I believe John the Baptist was a man zealous for his call to be God's last prophet before the arrival of the Messiah, Jesus the Christ. He may be criticized for his open denunciation of sin in various disguises, but was true to what he believed was the responsibility to live according to the TORAH, the Jewish Scriptures.

You cannot describe any biblical character because they may not have been real people. The Bible is a flawed, man-made book. Even if this person did exist, the validity and accuracy of his biography is not verifiable and is merely hearsay.

in terms of psychology he was manic depressed, and suffered from schyzophrenia and had a complete mental breakdown when his parents died and thus had a persecution complex even until he was behead at the request of a teenagers mothers hurt feelings.
Of course none of this is true. but it would be spun like that in todays False witness and anti christian Media world. He ate wild honey and locusts and definitely had freinds among the angels and was sent before the Messiah to Usher his coming.

the greatest of prophets.. but did no miracles
Easy to pass over and miss.. but a clear sign that pointed to Jesus more clearly than any other up till that time...mistreated by man yet honored by God.... Any Christian can point to Jesus yet more clearly than even John
Both Jesus and John's birth were announced and promised by angels
Both Jesus and John told people to repent
John was filled with the HOly SPirit form birth
Jesus was a holy child
John was the greatest prophet up till then but not worthy to stoop to help Jesus with His shoes yet Jesus stooped to die for all the redeemed
John baptized with water
Jesus baptized with fire so to speak and the Holy Spirit
(locust taste better with lots and lots of wild honey)

The little information there is about him is in the Bible. Since the Bible does such a poor job of character development, I have no opinion on him. My guess is that he is probably a fictional character.

He made ready the way for the Lord....told others about "the one who is coming, to save people from their sins" ---and John says:
John 1:27
He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."
John 1:23
John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "
