ive just got a new hifi. Everywhere on websites and everyfin it says 2X290W + 340W Subwoofer. On the back of the main unit it says 205W.
I was wonderig if the websites and everything was wrong. If its 205W it wont be as loud, obviously.
I'm just curious.
What does RMS mean aswell?

More watts does NOT necessarily mean more volume. It also depends on the current flow of the amp, the efficiency and impedance of the speakers and the quality of the speaker cable, for a start.

I have heard a pair of horn speakers being driven by an 18w per channel valve amp, that would literally pin you to the wall with sound. Conversely, I have heard alleged '500w per channel' amps sound as feeble as as a kitten's meow.

Many companies still advertise their amps and speakers by the amount of power they allegedly produce, often because people mistakenly believe that more watts is better and louder.

To do this they will use the P.M.P.O. (peak music power output) figure - i.e. wind everything to the max, until the speakers blow. It's usually about 16 times higher than the genuine figure.
Some use the D.I.N. figure - better but still usually about 8 times the real power output.
More honest is R.M.S. (root mean squared) at 10% T.H.D. (total harmonic distortion) - until you realise that you can actually HEAR the distortion when it's as low as 1% T.H.D! ( R.M.S. at 10% T.H.D. is usually double the genuine power output).
The true and accurate figure is R.M.S., measured at 1 metre with 0.1% T.H.D.

An amp, producing a genuine 100w per channel, running through an efficient pair of speakers with decent cables, will quite happily fill an average living room with a wall of sound.

While agreeing with the second answer, I would also add that the impedance of the loadspeakers also has a major bearing on the overall output of an amplifier. Most amps used to be designed to drive 8ohm speakers but many these days quote the maximum output driving into loads as low as 4ohms.

I would also suggest that while the figures 2X290W + 340W are the respective amplifier outputs (quite possibly PMPO or Peak Power) into 4ohm loads, the figure of 205W is probably the overall load that the amplifier draws from the mains supply.

the 2x290W and 340W most likely refer to the maximum wattage that the speakers can handle. the 205w would be the maximum output of the main unit. Although I don't know what the letters stand for, RMS is the continous wattage that the system can produce. So a system with a RMS of 100 would actually be better than a 100W system because 100watts would be the absolute most the system could produce whereas RMS is constant.
