Well, alot of highly realized monks have this rainbow ray of lights when they pass away, It is a sign, these signs are seen mostly when a highly realized tantric master who is enlightened passed away.
In laymans word they are entering the clear light state or bardo. Some of these highly realized lama will be in meditation post when they are in the bardo (a state when one passed away) and It remains there for days, weeks, months or years as it depends on their attainments
The rainbow colour will come out of their body as a sign. This is actually the same thing that happened to Lama Tsongkhapa.
I will be doing a blog on the life of Lama Tsongkhapa soon, and you will know how many mandala offering, postration, mantras and so forth that he did in his entire life.
Basically it will take me more than 20 life to compleat what he did in just 1 simple lifetime.
If you are looking forward for the story, let me know, my email is tsondrue.gyatso@gmail.com

It is the most supreme level attained by tantric practitioners, which means the person transferred their consciousness into the realm of clear light, or supreme buddhahood. They emanate or turn themselves into variegated light in the form of a "rainbow body" after their physical body dissolves.
It takes a HUGE amount of work to attain this level, beyond sutra level practice into tantra-level practice and you NEED a GOOD lama to get to this level.
Hope this helps

I've never heard of it called a rainbow body, but the gist of it is,
The body emits rays of light that represent the different dellusions of life.
It is meant to symbolize how man is susceptible to many evils, but the enlightened man can contain all of those evils without them hurting him or his peace of mind.
That is one example,
the other would be the chakras,
Each chakra has a different color.

perhaps it was an auric image of a body ?
like outlined with many colours ?
its the only thing i can think of sorry
but if this is correct then it is showing the energy surrounding the body ... and the more spiritual a person is , the more vibrant the colours are said to be
