How popular do you think Lincoln was during the bloodiest fighting in our country? So far we've lost about 3K soldiers in Iraq compared with this many in the US Civil war when we had a much smaller population.

At least 618,000 Americans died in the Civil War, and some experts say the toll reached 700,000. The number that is most often quoted is 620,000. At any rate, these casualties exceed the nation's loss in all its other wars, from the Revolution through Vietnam.
The Union armies had from 2,500,000 to 2,750,000 men. Their losses, by the best estimates:
Battle deaths: 110,070
Disease, etc.: 250,152
Total 360,222

The Confederate strength, known less accurately because of missing records, was from 750,000 to 1,250,000. Its estimated losses:
Battle deaths: 94,000
Disease, etc.: 164,000
Total 258,000

The leading authority on casualties of the war, Thomas L. Livermore, admitting the handicap of poor records in some cases, studied 48 of the war's battles and concluded:
Of every 1,000 Federals in battle, 112 were wounded.
Of every 1,000 Confederates, 150 were hit.
Mortality was greater among Confederate wounded, because of inferior medical service.

The most hated I would guess to be Richard Nixon. However, we are so polarized by politics that it depends on which side of the fence you sit. Too many in recent history, it was Bill Clinton (the Conservative Right Wing) or George Bush (the Liberal Left Wing) that gains the title of most hated. In the 1980s, the Liberals were pretty hip-hopping mad and vitriolic towards the Honorable Ronald Reagan. The current President's father, George Herbert Walker Bush, seemed to hold a pretty middle of the road approach to not have so many enemies. Look what it got him, one term. Bet if he could do it again, "Read my lips, NO NEW TAXES!" would not pass through his lips. We are to fickle in America and blame the President for many things he has no control over. The previous President George Bush fell victim to the economy, which in many respects was the fault of the Federal Reserve. In the Feds defense, Mr. Greenspan was only doing his best to soften the fall. Would you really want to be president?

I am no George Bush fan, but his popularity during his presidency have shown some of the highest approval ratings as well as some of the lowest amongst the presidents. That is what all the polls show.

Benjamin Harrison replaced into elected in what replaced into broadly properly-known to be an election heavily tainted with fraud (as unfavorable to Bush's SUSPECTED fraud in Florida), and controlled to hold the electoral college vote even regardless of the incontrovertible fact that he lost the popular vote with the aid of over one hundred,000 votes. He did have a usually stable and lively foreign places coverage, yet he replaced into additionally in place of work during the bloodbath at Wounded Knee, that's broadly seen to be between the main suitable atrocities committed against any community American united states of america. he's the only U.S. president that replaced into so undesirable that the guy he defeated controlled to defeat him back interior the subsequent election (Grover Cleveland).

It's hard to quantify "hatred" for a president, so I will give you the numbers based on approval rating.

Based on approval rating, Bush is NOT the lowest in history.

Bush's approval rating - 47%
Jimmy Carter - 34%
Richard Nixon - 24%

These are based on approval rating when the president left office, so Bush has a couple of years to bring his numbers down to record-beating lows.
