Well i can only tell you about the early focus. GARBAGE. I had a 2000 ford focus zx3 maunal. Great stock suspension, held the road very well. Great interior, bad radio (single solid peice=radio heat and ac controls)
My first issue when owning one, 4000 miles on the car, and the clutch went. It was under warranty, and it would be covered, but i decided to upgrade the clutch. total cost=$900
Next issue was the gas cutting off if you drive at high speed on curvy roads. I solved this with a resoviour fuel tank and an additional fuel pump at a cost of $400.
Next issue i had was the transmission. I lost reverse with 6000 miles on the car. Replaced with warranty.
8000 miles on the car.... Recall, fuel splashing in the tank caused the fuel pump to cut out... too late.
Ball joints needed to be replaced soon after the recall... warranty
I had a good 2 years of driving on it before i had my next serious problem.
The retaining springs on the brake pads disintergrated, dislodging my drivers side brake pad, causing it to literally explode. New caliper and rotor required to fix... warranty covered it, but i decided to have them replace the caliper, and decided power stop cross drilled rotors would be a nice upgrade.
100,000 miles on the car, boom, everything breaks. Im driving down the highway and all of the sudden i heard a high squeal, my temp gauge shoots past H, my clutch dies...
I dont care about the car any longer, so i dump it.
If i were too do it again, i would buy a honda.
But then again, all first generation cars have issues... The 06 focus might be much more refined, but do not buy and early model.

::EDIT::
I also remember having a recall on i believe was the exterior lighting relays... This was during the 2 year problem free ownership. I just picked them up at the dealer and replaced them myself.

well...i have myself a 06 Focus SE with a few nice features like power windows, locks, remote entry system , 6 in dash mp3 cdplayer, the safety package, Large trunk room and i bought it brand new for $10400 plus license and taxes in may and the car is very fuel efficient and reliable I have taken it to Las Vegas five times already and it runs really good the only thing that i recommend you is that if you buy it from the dealer dont buy the ford alarm because it doesnt work well on the focus but anyhow my focus has 10500 miles and it's fun to drive....im thinking about trading it in for a Fusion because it is bigger and has more features....and is also cheap...i almost forgot the 08 focus is redesigned check it out @ allcarwallpapers.com

We have an 01 focus and it has 103000 miles on it and it is still running strong. my grandma and aunt also have 01 focus's and they also love them. They handle great and they also preforms great. If I were you i would buy the ST as long as you don't mind driving a stick, because you get almost 20 extra horsepower. my dad is a mechanic at a ford dealership and he says they rarely see any focus's in for repair. Also now if you buy a focus they come with 5 year 100,000 mile warranty.

I've had 2 Ford Focus', a 4 dr sedan and a 4 dr wagon. I have liked them on the whole. Both the sedan and wagon are very roomy - I can carry 5 people and quite frequently carry 5 people and 2 wheelchairs in the back of the wagon (they would also fit in the back of the sedan) I think that they ok.

I think there a fairly good car , for the normal one they get 6-8L to the 100k's and they last a fair while. For the sporty one the XR5 is awesome 105kph in 1st gear and exelent fuel ecconomy just low on luxuries like cruise and slip diff. Other wise a great reliable car.

Piece o' crap and I wouldn't go near one for all the money in the universe with a thousand foot pole. They crumple too easily in low speed accidents. A friend met part of his engine when he was doing thirty on ice, smashed his right front and just missed himself.

I rented one last week and it got 30 mpg on the highway. Probably a good car if you don't need 4 wheel drive like I do.

what year? I liked them up until their new 07 model, the previous models looked good. Gas is good and they are pretty snappy, I raced one in Daddy's 96 Viper GTS and the Focus can manage to still be seen a little in the rear view mirrors, unlike those Hondas...

I think they should bring the Euro-Focus to the US.
