XP runs best with 1gb. It will run on less but it will not run well. With less than that, you will also be limited as far as running anti-malware programs, such as real-time virus checkers, or other background tasks, such as Yahoo Desktop Search. If you do a lot of multitasking, 2gb would not be out of line. If you do a lot of graphics, 4gb would be best. All of this assumes you have a motherboard that supports this.
Note that if you are planning on upgrading to Vista, you can double those numbers.

Dave P speaks nonsense. I think he must be in the business of selling RAM.
Unless you are doing serious gaming or graphics work, 384 to 512 MB is more than plenty.

I would have at least 512MB. Of course, more is better with any windows program!
