Marathon training and joining a running club that does track workouts will make you lose weight faster than any other exercise.
Rowing? Great cardio. Highly recommended.
Kung Fu? Great workout, but i don't think this is going to cause the same weight loss as sustained aerobic exercise. Also, there are many styles of kung fu, some more athletic than others.
Machines? Treadmill and elyptical will give you similar results to sustained aerobic exercise like cycling and running.
Weight lifting? This is the biggest weight-loss joke around. Every time i see a fat person say, "I'm going to lift weights, which will raise my metabolism and it'll burn fat 24 hours a day," I laugh my butt off.
All a fat person will accomplish by lifting weights is to become a very powerful fat person. They'll have huge muscles, which will be almost entirely concealed under their fat.
As for running, you need to run for longer than about 30 minutes. Your first 30 minutes of running uses glycogen as fuel. After that, you run out of easy glycogen stores and start actually metabolizing body fat to use as fuel.
Same with cycling, but you probably have to ride for 45 minutes at least before you'll switch to fat as a fuel source.
Very few exercises actually cause you to metabolize fat during the process of exercising. You need exercises you can do for a LONG time. So, running, cycling and swimming are always the holy trinity of aerobic exercise.

Hello there! I am a martial arts instructor and have a degree in exercise science. Also, I lost 80 lbs and have kept it off for 7 years now. The best way to lose weight is doing something that you love. Taking a class is usually a better idea than performing exercises that rely on one's own drive and dedication. Simply put, the only thing you'll need to do when taking classes is to GET IN THE CAR. You will push yourself once you get there.... the trouble is getting there!
I began taking martial arts and eating a"sensible" diet. No weight came off for about 5 months, but then it just seemed to fall off. Martial arts worked for me because I loved going. Not only are you exercising, you are learning a life skill.
If you are self-motivated, try something running or rowing. Remember that you will lose more fat rowing than you would running. Running is an activity that uses the glycogen stored in your cells to fuel the activity (glucose + oxygen = glycogen....ie, stored sugar). On the contrary, a long walk or row would burn a higher % of fat when doing these activities... your body says "Hey, I should start using fat for this activity... I get twice the energy from one gram of fat as I do with one gram of sugar."
Weight lifting is something that will always be beneficial. It reduces your risk of osteoporosis while SHAPING your body. Every pound of muscle burns 30-40 calories a day... add 10 pounds of muscle, you will burn 300-400 extra calories a day which equals about a pound of fat every 7-10 days. Weight train 3 days per week and try 3 cardio sessions a week. If doing them the same day, weight train first, as it is anaerobic and you will burn sugar.... then jump on the treadmill or take a class, and you will begin to burn fat faster, as you would have already used your glycogen stores.
Food. remember "fat burns in a carbohydrate flame." Stick to food in it's most natural form. Eat a wide variety of fruits and veggies, stay away from saturated fats and load up on egg whites and fish!
Good luck to you!!!

Any exercise that will keep your heart rate up is a good exercise for weight loss. Weight lifting is also a good exercise for weight loss because bigger muscles burn more fat. they need to be done together for best results.
All veggies & fruit are good in their natural form...it's all the other stuff you need to limit.

saying that its a 1500 calorie food routine dosn't say a lot. There are key aspects. there is in consumer-friendly words 280 energy in a snickers bar. the nice and comfortable button is to devour small parts by way of the day. devour about a gram of protein an afternoon in step with pound of weight. Take a good and organic nutrition. If the nutrition doesn't say no extra this that blah blah blah....its no longer likely to help. Rember to drink an excellent type of water, and sugar, salt, trans fat, and any hydrogenated oil isn't your chum. Goodluck

i would do combination of weight lifting and cardio. I do weights 1 - 2 times a week. And then cardio for 40 minutes 3 - 4 times a week. My favorite cardio is a combination of rowing maching and elliptical trainer. Those two cardo work your entire body. not just legs like on treadmill.

ok, that guy above who posted the long answer is pretty clueless. weight lifting is THE best way to lose weight, not because of how much calories it burns while you're lifting, but because how many calories you'll burn AFTER lifting, as you rest and recover over the next 24 hours. there's an afterburn effect that can burn hundreds of calories because your body is having to repair microtears in your muscles. the more muscle mass you build, the more calories it'll take just to maintain your frame.
the best workout to do is a full body routine, focusing on big compound movements with free weights to maximize the number of muscles you use per lift. stick to things like squats, deadlifts, lunges, bench press, rows, pull-ups, and dips. here are two sample workouts you can rotate:
day 1: squat, bench press, romanian deadlift, bent over dumbbell rows
day 2: rest or cardio
day 3: deadlifts, military press, lunges, pull-ups
day 4: rest or cardio (but be sure to rest at least one day a week. over-training will interfere with proper muscle recovery. also get enough sleep since that's when your body grows.)
however, for the sake of cardiovascular health, you should also do any or all of those other activities. as long as you're sweating and finding yourself tired/gasping for air, you're having a good workout! if you run though, go for sprints because they have a similar afterburn effect to weight lifting, whole traditional steady state cardio can actually consume lean muscle mass for fuel.
it's not just fruits and vegetables, but an overall clean diet that'll help you lose weight. unless you're an olympic athlete, the amount of exercise you do won't make a big dent in your calorie output. eating 5-6 small meals throughout the day, controlling your portions will. base each meal around a lean protein (since protein has been shown to require more calories to digest/breakdown) like chicken, egg whites, whey powder, and lean cuts of beef. you can also go with fat free dairy products like milk, cheese, yogurt, and cottage cheese. THEN for carbs, try to make sure they come from healthy sources like fruits and vegetables (like any will work, but i find it easy to eat baby carrots, canned beans, cherry tomatoes, and broccoli for veggies, and apples, bananas, oranges, and frozen berries for fruits). there's also whole grains such as 100% whole wheat bread or tortillas, brown rice, and instant oatmeal. finally, there's fat, which you need to maintain your good cholesterol, as well as developing testosterone and growth hormone (both which will stimulate muscle growth). get fat from sources like natural peanut butter, any kind of nuts, flax seeds, olive oil, and fish.
oh, and every now and then, reward yourself by eating whatever you damn please. that's the only way to keep your sanity and not get off track.
hope that helps!

All of them for both questions. I've lost a lot of weight on elliptical trainers and I like fruits like bananas and oranges to put carbs back into my body to recover from a good work out.
