Your body needs a certain amount of sleep and it will get it; it doesn't matter where or when at some point you will just pass out. Therefore, its kind of dangerous to force yourself to stay up if you might be driving.

In general, short term sleep loss won't hurt much. Continual sleep loss is bad. Extended lengths of short term sleep loss is bad. Everyone is different though. I know an individual who thrives on 3 hours of sleep per night. He sometimes stays up for 3 days with a rare 10 minute nap. He is unusual. There are others who go to the other extreme, but the norm is well established. Health will deteriorate without sleep.
It's odd, the physical body only needs some rest. Sleep is for the mind.

Wow... the military makes their men stay up for alot longer than twenty four hours to make them experience sleep deprivation (which can kill you) some tried to put money in trees thinking it was a soda machine.... if you start hallucinating take some vacation time...

short term sleep loss is more dangerous than long term believe it or not.

the health risks are far greater, and actually it costs millions of dollars to employers every year due to sickness, groginess, etc.

we all have rhythms in our bodies that program us for sleep to rejuvenate the body. mess with that too much and you are asking for trouble.
