With XP, you should have Word Pad, it will usually read .doc files, but some of the formatting may be lost.
I like http://www.openoffice.org and it's free.
You can also just get the viewer (to read .doc files only) at http://www.microsoft.com/office/downloads/

Either OpenOffice.org or go to the Microsoft website and you can download a free Word Reader that allows you to open and print but not edit *.doc files.

Right click on any .doc file, choose Open Program then Select Program. Highlight Microsoft Word and also check the box on the bottom of that page that says "Always use this program to open files of this type."

With the Wordprocessor in OpenOffice you can open and creat .doc-files.
You can download it at http://www.openoffice.org/
But it's a complete Office Suite.

Otherwise try AbiWord, there you can importdoc-files, too
