I think the paternal address should change but not specifically at a certain age. Usually when children enter their puberty stage they change. Boys usually will not tell there teenage friends that they have to ask their daddy if they can go out. They most likely will ask their father. I'm only 56 and I'm hearing "Hey Pops". Here is my take on the name changing: First it's Dada, then Daddy, then Dad, Father, then it's My Old Man, then it's Pops and Gramps!

Seems like to me since you've been "daddy" his whole life, to ask him to change is a little unreasonable.
Put yourself in his shoes, what if your wife changed her name and insisted that you call her by the new name...give it a try and see how uncomfortable it feels.
If you're worried about his masculinity or maturity because he calls you daddy, don't worry.
If he's never called you "dad" or "father" up to this point, 12 years is a long time to get used to something then have to change it.
Besides, there are so many things you should be thankful for instead of focusing on something that...if you would excuse me...something that petty.
Shame on you!!

Most boys over 12 choose to call him dad. Saying that there is nothing wrong with daddy in fact I think its cute!

I think the child should call the parent what he wants...dad, pop, daddy, father... He's going to stop being so chummy when he hits puberty anyway, so why tell him he has to stop calling you Daddy?
You seem to have an inflated sense of dignity that is inappropriate in this arena.

it is fine as long as the father and the son are comfortable with it. A daddy will always be a daddy :)

It is a cultural thing. In the south parents are called mama and daddy forever, think of Walton's Mountain. I think it's fine but hey, you're the daddy.

What's so wrong with your child calling you "Daddy"?
I mean, I know kids start calling their parents "Mom" and "Dad" after awhile, but it shouldn't really matter that much.
If it bothers you so much, just ask him to call you dad. Not that big of a deal.

you should let your son decide. I he feels too old to call you daddy then he should decide to call you dad or what ever, but don't tell him he can't call you daddy if he wants to. I'm 18 and i still call my father daddy and i always will. oh and My daddy calls his parents Momma and Daddy

It's a little unusual, but I think it's harmless.
If it bothers you to be called "daddy," just ask him to call you "dad" because you like it better.

Probably not. If the other kids hear him, they will tease him. Dad or Father are both better, but Dad would be the natural one, shortening the word he's already used to.
