The Civil Rights movement was page one news during much of the Viet Nam era. Activism was prevalent with both peaceful and militant groups (both pro & con, both white & black). Some were forecasting a race war. George Wallace gathered a significant number of votes for President. The population was seggregated by work place, residence & school. Each race was ignorant of the other thru rumors & stereotypes.
Millions served in the military during this period. The draft was in effect. In the 1950's, Harry Truman intergrated the military. Whites served along with Blacks, Hispanics, Indians, etc. Command positions were filled by all races. Each race began to judge a man by his actions & not skin color. The "buddy system" was driven home in combat.
By living together & keeping each other alive, men discovered they had much in common & need not fear one another.

Because the majority of the 60,000+ causualties were African Americans. Due to their economic & social standing, they were the largest resource pool for the draft.
Ironically they were willing to give so much to a nation who gave them so little.
