You can check toiletries of any size. In your carry-on you must follow the 3-1-1 rule: 3 ounce containers of shampoo, etc., in 1-quart sized zip-lock plastic bag, 1 plastic bag per person. You can keep some make-up with you, if you follow the 3-1-1- rule. We bought travel size shampoo, soap, lotions to carry on, then put regular containers in plastic bags in our checked luggage.

To know what you can bring when travelling, you will need to distinguish between your checked luggage and your carry on.
You can bring things like shampoo and conditioner without problems in your checked luggage.
However, you have a lot of restrictions for your carry on: in general, any liquids or gels over 100ml cannot be brought on board (exception: baby formula). If you have liquids or gels of not more than 100 ml, you have to present the containers in something like a Ziploc bag to the people at Security.
To be 100% sure, I would recommend you check up with your airline. If you're from Canada, you can go to the link at Air Canada's website: http://www.aircanada.com/en/news/travel_advisory5.html

Well you might want to call the airport a couple nights before you leave just to be sure but I'm almost positive that the shampoo and hair products, toothpaste, etc. are okay to take again. If you're planning on taking two bags with you it would probably be better to check one in and take the smaller one with you on the plane. Pack an extra pair of clothes in there (in case your luggage is late misplaced, doesn't happen often but it's better to be prepared) also you can take your ipod, phone and laptop with the smaller bag.

I would suggest that the shampoo, etc.. that you pack those particular items in your checked luggage, then you don't have to limit the size of those items to 3 oz or less. Also if you are planning to bring your makeup with you in your carry on luggage, they have to be 3 oz or less and kept in a 1 qt ziploc bag, you may do better to just pack in your checked luggage. If you have more questions I suggest that you visit the TSA webstie http://www.tsa.gov/ they have the complete list of what you can and can not bring on the aircraft in both your checked and carry on luggage.

You can pack any liquids/gels in your checked luggage without restriction. You can bring liquids, gels, etc. in your carry-on as long as they are in travel size containers of 3 ounces or less and they all must fit in one clear, quart size ziptop bag so they can screened separately through security. You can find out all of the details at http://www.tsa.gov .
