Smooth fabrics are easier to get the fur off. Velvet would be a real pain. Leather's easy to clean but even the best-behaved cat will accidentally scratch it a bit when he jumps up. Check whether the Scotch-Gard type coatings discourage cat fur. Ultimately, I think, if you're going to let the cat on the furniture, you're going to have to clean the fur off. Or put a blanket on one seat and only let the cat sit on that bit. Easy-clean's good anyway because of cats' tendencies to leap onto your favourite things as soon as they've got their paws all muddy. My cat thinks white bedclothes are the best thing to wipe his feet on!

Cat hair will stick to any fabric upholstery. In my experience, the best thing to get is leather unless you have a cat with front claws who uses the furniture as a scratching post. Certain leathers are dyed all the way through and some minor scratching can be buffed out. You can vacuum the hair right off of leather upholstery. If you don't want to do the leather, try to get a fabric with no nap and as little texture as possible.

We have a thick tapestry type fabric on ours.

It takes well to the cats sleeping on it and walking on it. The fabric has a woven texture so it won't puncture like something thin would if their claws come out.

One downside, one of our kitties like to scratch the side. The fabric holds up well but she's pulled a few threads. With some trimming it looks good as new.

We've had to just toss an attractive throw blanket over the area to discourage her and give her an alternative to claw at. The cough is fine, but I'm sure if she kept doing it there would be some damage over time.

Tapestry cleans well, too. Can even take a vacuum to it to get up fur.

as bad as it sounds, cat hair will stick to anything you buy, so when you invest in your new furniture, invest in some micro-fiber cloths( like the ones used for washing cars), it you take one of the cloths, dampen it, and run it over your furniture on a regular basis, you shouldn't have too bad of an issue, you should also invest in a good cat hair brush, or you can just try and train your kitty to not get on the furniture( although they tend to get on it when you aren't home :P). the other choice is all white to match the hair, but its gets really dirty really fast, or you can look into getting a sofa cover, one that can come off and be washed, and my last suggestion, as tacky as it is, you can get a plastic cover...

We have that microfiber that looks like suede- and we have 3 cats. Cat hair is not a problem, and I was worried about cat pokes in the fabric (we had leather before) but we have had them for almost 2 years and they look great!!

You can find some really nice furniture in canvas or cotton duck material. Both are very durable and easy to clean. If you don't want to go that route, you can always go with a slipcover too. Good luck!

Well, if your cat doesn't scratch then leather is your best bet. Stay away from anything like velour or velvet because it retains hair really bad.

Don't buy leather, of course. Try buying couches made out of velvety and wooly fabrics.

I don't think you need to worry, cats are not that picky, they will gladly sink their claws into any fabric you choose.
