It does seem quite difficult to locate a breeder of the dark red golden retrievers in CA - a lot of breeders seem to be going for the much lighter ones. These are the best that I've managed to come up with ...

I would do a search on the golden retriever clubs in your area and contact the breeders they refer. The only dark red goldens I have seen have been from field lines, not the ones you typically see in the dog show ring.

I have been running hunt tests with my labs for several years and there are many goldens who attend. Those dogs look like what I imagine you are seeking, not the big fluffly blond dogs who are the typical family dog you see....
