i have been having rpoblem sleeping for a long time now. I get up at about 6.40 in the morning and head off to work about 7.30ish. I've never experienced/been stress, even in the harshest (academic and work) conditions. I go to bed about 11.30 at night but still have problems sleeping, i close my eye but can't seem to fall asleep till about 1, and then HATE waking up. Even if i go to bed at 10 i still can't fall asleep!!

Everytime i have about 3 days holiday, i revert back to sleeping till late in the afternoon and going to bed at about 4 or 5 in the morning. Am i natural night bird?

What can i do to fall asleep QUICKLY and EARLY? I've tried over the counter sleeping pills but they don't do f u k all...please help with herbal remedies, techniques or anything else over the counter stuff that has proven to work...

When you're on the bed just don't think about anything, just close your eyes, and keep them closed, don't open them, or you can do something to make you more tired before you sleep e.g., not eating as much, running etc.

Suggestions: 1. Turn off all lights and other distractions (this includes music/electronics...) 2. Lay down in a comfortable position on your bed/wherever you sleep 3. Clear your mind of most thoughts, if you have trouble doing this (like I often do), then focus on one thing 4. Keep your eyes closed When you have your computer on it'll make it a little more difficult for you to go to sleep, if you're a person that can't fall asleep without noise... try a fan or, if it's too cold, turn on some music but soft enough that it is simply a background noise. If you focus too much on the music, it will make it more difficult to sleep. Good luck sleeping, I know it's awful when you can't. I just hope you don't have to be up early so you can sleep in.

You COULD be a night bird! I am, but I have the freedom (self employed) to work when I'm at my best. I've often thought EVERY kind of job should provide day or night choices--this would make places available to anyone at any time, & also help with commute traffic. But back to your question. Some people suggest a warm bath, or even a work out etc. & not to eat soon before going to bed. Perhaps because that works for them. When I've been up, say, 21 hours, I found it difficult to go to sleep & STAY asleep. It took a lot of discipline, but if I completely empty my mind of all that's going on in my life, & focus on relaxing body & mind, it truly works. Having an environment in your bedroom that pleases you is important, too. Just the addition of a little amber lamp added to my feeling "serene." I would never, ever take any medication to sleep, although some people's problems may require that, at least for awhile. (Having a purring kitty in your lap can be soothing, too!)

Edit: Forgot to add: Sometimes, trying too hard to go to sleep has the opposite effect..

Edit: Here I am again--don't drink chocolate, it's got caffiene in it!

For many years I had this same problem, I tried everything, exercise, changed my diet /lifestyle, pills, -Nothing worked, until I went to see my new Dr. She was just out of Medical School and in her residency. She referred me to see a sleep therapist, where I was taught the process of self hypnosis, I took about a week but after that I slept soundly every night awoke alert and not tired , and ready for work or play. Haven't had a sleepless night since. My wife poo-pooed my self hypnosis idea but now complains that I can come to bed an hour after she does, And then has to listen to me snore. (heavy breathing)and as a bonus If I need to get up early for any reason ...I get up and go about my daily routine without any problems. Maybe this could be prescription you've been looking for. Here's to a good nights sleep E.L.

Watch "Notting Hill" with Julia Robers and Hugh Grant, after 5 minutes of movie you will be sleeping like a baby, hahahaha.

Now, seriously, I guess you should consult a doctor and maybe you will be given a medicine to take and help you fall asleep... Bach Flowers are an excellent alternative. Meditation helps you enormously to feel tired, relax and you will fall asleep, listen to some new age music, it will help you relax, close your eyes while listening to it and you will fall asleep...

Another alternative is that you keep yourself busy, sports, gyms, workl, courses, when you keep busy during day , doing many things, you just get home and fall asleep...

Well, just giving you these advices from personal experiences and consulted my best friend who is into meditation..Good luck!

Dear!
Never use any pills or drugs or medicines. it is not the solution. it is temperary and will make you adict. Similarly, less use of coefee or caffiene is also not the solution for better sleep. I have know someone who sleeps instantly when he takes coefee or tea or caffien. Niether, any kind of physical excercise is the solution. Because sometime tired body cannot help in sleeping. In my opinion it is only the unneccessery THOUGHTS , both concious and unconsioucly in mind due to your sensitive personality that does not allow to relax your mind to sleep instantly. I suggest you better consult some good psychiatric or psychologist to advice you.

don't stress yourself about it there is nothing to worry
first thing you got to do is that don't just keep stressing on the thing that you not sleepy..secondly what you can do is get into a reading habit be4 sleeping or maybe workout..be positive about it and would help you out don't worry..if one day you don't sleep let it be you would surely get tired and sleep the next day..also i think maybe it can happen coz you are going through some tension so relive yourself from that if there are any..and it would be a personal advice for you please keep away from pills and stuff

Concentrate on relaxing every muscle in your body after you get into bed. Start with your toes and work your way up. Stretch each muscle, hold it for a couple of seconds and then relax it. Concentrate on only one area at a time. First your toes, then your feet, then your ankles, etc.

If that doesn't work, say a rosary. I fall asleep every time before I finish! :-)

Perhaps go for a brisk walk around the block or to a park when you get home from work. As already said, some exercise should make you tired and help you get to sleep.

Or you could smoke a joint.

Can you make time during the day to work out? Is there any room in your lifestyle to join a gym or do vigorous cardio vascular? That would conk you out at night.
