my boyfriend started taking nyquil about 2 months ago for a cold but he's been better for a while now but he still takes it every night because he said he can't sleep without it. Does that mean he's addicted to nyquil?

It's probably more of a psychological addiction than a true physical one....More than likely, he only thinks he can't sleep without it. What is actually making him sleep is the antihistamine and alcohol in Nyquil and those aren't things anyone should abuse. Plus, it won't be long before his body will build up a resistance to the antihistamine to the point where they will no longer make him sleepy - at least not at the regular dosage.

He has to start remembering that he was able to sleep just fine before he started taking it, and there's absolutely no reason why he can't do it again.

If he's got some stressors that are making it hard for him to relax, he needs to see his doctor to see if a true sleeping aid needs to be prescribed for him since Nyquil was never intended for that purpose.

An alternative is also Sleepytime Herbal Tea made by Celestial Seasonings. A cup of it before bedtime is really soothing and relaxing, but totally nonmedicinal.

Nyquil does not have alcohol in it. You can prove this to anyone by looking at the label and using common sense. On the lable they provide and adult dose and a children dose. Now if NyQuil has alcohol and alcohol is illegal for children why would there be a child dose on the bottle? There's no alcohol in NyQuil. However there is Dextromethorphan in NyQuil and most other cough suppressant. Destromethorphan, or DXM, is commonly used as a cough suppressant but also is the reason why people get carded when buying it. DXM in large doses can make you very high. Yes some believe it is addictive mentally and physically. It is not technically a narcotic and by definition shouldn't be addictive but you can believe what you want when it comes to whether or not you can get addicted to it. Other than DXM there are no other mind-altering chemicals in the ingredients. Hope this helped.

He is addicted, maybe not physically, but in the least psychologically. There might be a danger that he could become physically addicted to it, eg: he might not be able to sleep well without nyquil. That would obviously suck and should be enough reason for him to quit.

Try getting him to use Nyquil only on nights that he really needs to get a good night's sleep.

Also, try Valerian, an herbal sleep remedy.

peace...

YES.

Buy him some "Sleep Easy Tea" - sold at any food market - and make him a nice mug of tea before he goes to bed and he will sleep!

Nyquil is very dangerous for a few reasons, but the main reason is that it can cause liver failure if the directions are not followed correctly.

(plus it contains alcohol and alcohol is addictive)

I've heard of people getting addicted to drugs but Nyquil? I think he really is addicted and you should get him to a doctor or get him some sleeping pills so he can sleep easier.
