99% of the time this means they need to (bear with me here) have their anals glands cleaned. Im not joking. Call the vet, tell them about it and ask about the anal glands.

Dogs have this gland right inside their bum, the vet will pinch their bumhole and this horrible "poison" squirts out. When a dog poops, the poop is supposed to squeeze some of this out, but most of the time it doesnt happen, therefore it collects in there and makes their bum itchy.

Dont wait on this, call your vet. If you dont get their glands cleaned, they could get a fatal infection.

*** SORRY WHEN I POSTED THIS THE FIRST TIME, no one had mentioned the anal glands.

Cats and dogs both do that when their anal glands need expressing - some people have them done by the groomers or vets quite often, but it's a natural thing to happen, and nature sorts it out. Some animals never have a problem. Some dogs, once they have it done, seem to lose the ability to get rid of it by themselves. If you leave it, you'll find that he'll have a really bad smelly poo, then he'll be fine again. I think you should only have it expressed if he really seem to be suffering for quite a while with it. I suppose worms could make it itch - a normal Frontline or Stronghold or Drontal should sort it out if so. If she cares about her dog at all, he will already be wormed and she will have a vet she can go to to check it out properly.

I know that many people have answered with the anal glands needing their periodic cleaning - - - and they're right about that, but I thought I would pose another possibility: the dog's diet.

Presumably, your dog eats only dog food? Ah, maybe not? I know many dog owners give their dogs a few table scraps here & there without thinking about the effects on food that treats "us" well. Just another thing you may want to think about when watching your dog doing the bum rub.

Sounds like the dogs anal glands need to be expressed. It's very itchy and irritating to them when this gland is full. It seems to be more of a problem in small dogs than larger ones. A groomer or vet can take care of this.

I have a dog that does this. For her, it is a sign that she needs her anal glands expelled. In some dogs, these will get blocked and it itches and is painful. Call the vet and take the dog in. It is very inexpensive ($6.00 here) and is a quick procedure and will relieve the dog of the itching and pain that go along.

It could be worms or their anal sacs are full, which itches. The vet tech just pushed those a little and the stuff comes out and all better. When you take a dog to get groomed and they "express the anal sacs" this usually solves the problem. Or they could have fleas on their butt.

This is usually caused by the anal sacs needing emptied. Rarely will being wormy make a dog do that..
Any groomer will empty those sacs for you, and the dog will really appreciate it! Vets (usually the poor techs..lol) in my area will do this for $7, as well..

Most likely it is impacted anal glands. The vet, or for less money a groomer will take care of this for you. It is a great relief to the dog believe me and does not cost very much.

Dogs have glands on both sides of their anus. These glands put "their"sent into their poo. These glands get cloged with poo and cause the dog to get an itchy bum. Take him to the vet. They will express these glands for like 10 bucks. If you dont do this the glands can rupture and cause a nasty infection.

If your up to it you may be able to find on the inter net how to do this yourself!

Worms usually are NOT the cause of scooting. It is usually caused by irritation of the anal sacs. They are either full, impacted or infected. Scooting can also be caused by fleas and allergies. Take your dog to the vet and get anal sacs checked.
