-Take the downtown (south) #1 subway train
-Be sure and get on one of the first through the fifth cars from the front of the train.
-Ride the train to the end of the line in Manhattan which is Battery Park.
-Once you get off of the train, take the stairs up and out of the station. You will see the ferry terminal directly in front of you.
-The ferry runs every 40 minutes or so and the total ride time is about 45 minutes. It is free.
- The ferry takes you directly to the Staten Island ferry terminal.

There are NO subways that go directly from Manhattan to Staten Island. The "1" train goes into South Ferry (Manhattan side), and if you are in Staten Island, the MTA Staten Island Railway (which is their "subway") goes from the ferry terminal to Tottenville (the bottom tip)

The ferry is located at Battery Park on the manhattan side and at St. George's on the Statten Island side.

The fastest way is to take the express bus into Manhattan, and then take the (A) train to 191st Street. Or, if you live by St. George, you can take the ferry to Whitehall Street, and then take the (1) train to Chambers Street. From there, transfer to the (2) or (3) to 96th Street, and then transfer back to the (1) train (you'll pass one or two (1) trains, which will speed your trip). I hope this information was very helpful.
