Every enlistment in the US military is for a minimum of 8 years, what differs is the split between Active Duty, Reserve Duty, and Individual Ready Reserve Duty. When you Active Duty or Reserve enlistment is up, you will automatically be transferred to the IRR (providing you have not already done 8 years)

If you are sure that you want to do that then I would talk to your chain of command, but I am pretty sure especially if it is your first enlistment that you will have to serve out your full reserve contract, and once your Active Reserve time is up, then you can go IRR. I am not sure if they will just let you "change your mind".

Simple when your enlistment comes up , don't re-enlist . You'll most likely be put on IRR for two years .
