If you become a true atheist, you don't believe that there is a God. Therefore, you won't believe that there is a God to punish you. If you still believe that 'God' will punish you, you are not an atheist.

You are already being punished. Being in this material world where birth, old age, disease and death as well as fear and anxiety are our constantly present is our greatest punishment. Stop going downwards thinking of becoming an Atheist and start the process of going upwards towards the Supreme so you can get out of this miserable hellish place.
