Same basic principle with Jack Daniel's #7...it's not the original recepie, it's just the best one. Number 2 pencil is the best pencil, #1 sucks.

It's #2 on the hardness scale. The #1 lead pencil is very soft.

Because its the "second stage" pencil. The #1 pencil is large {big around} made for smaller hands such as kids in kindergarden or 1st grade {atleast when I was in school it was}.

I think that's supposed to be joke, but it's not funny so im not sure. #2 is the size of the pencil.
