I'm considering a trip to Toronto, Ontario. That's in Canada. I'm a US citizen. It's my understanding that as of January 2007, a passport will be required to reenter the US from Canada, where all that was required before was an original birth certificate and photo ID. Anyhow, being that my only travel abroad to date has been with the US military, I have no idea how to get a passport. So how's it done, what do I have to furnish, who do I have to bribe, etc.?

If you are travelling by land, a passport is not needed until 2008.
However, it is a good idea to go ahead and get one.
You can do so at most Post offices.
Here is the Passport Website.

Make sure that you have a birth certificate on hand. Then take it, and two passport-style photographs (my nearest Walgreen's was my most recent source) to any agency which is authorized to take passport applications; the post office is the most obvious (and the one I have used), but municipal government offices may do it also (they like the fifteen bucks that they get for taking the application). Be prepared to cough up close to a hundred bucks to finish the deal. Typical lead time is two to three weeks.

You can get one through your DMV. You'll need your ID, birth certificate, and normally your social security card. There's an application that you'll have to fill out. Overall it's pretty easy.
