I do drama at school and when I'm rehearsing with my friends
I'm fine, but when it comes to perfoming it infront of my class I get really embarressed and don't do the best I can!
Anyone have any ideas on how I can boost my confidence?

Thanks x

First things first: Relax, it's absolutely natural to be tense, embarrassed, nervous, etc. in front of a large group of people.

I used to act in college and for several years after being graduated; I've also directed post-graduation. Never failed that I would become petrified before a performance. But I kept remembering a few things:

1.) Rely on the character work that you've done to prepare for the role. Not just rehearsing by memorizing lines, but by actually *becoming* the character of the piece. That way, it isn't necessarily *you* out there, but your *character* in the context of the show. It takes some time, but once you can do that, you'll find that you're much more confident.

2.) Use the nervous energy you have by channeling it into the energy you want to give your performance -- perhaps vocally, or by movement or intonation.

Good luck! Keep at it; you'll be fine!

I know what you mean. I'm usually really nervous about performing or talking in front of my class.

Just remember that your class is your best audience and that they are all your friends. The more you think its embarrassing, the more it will be. Just take a deep breath and perform as if you don't care what anyone will think of you just go nuts! It's ony embarrassing when you think it will be embarrasing.

I don't know if that helped at all, but I hope it did. I tend to ramble a lot.

Yep, I was the same way. What helps me is just ignore everyone, keep your eyes on the class or audience, and stay focused. It helped me and I got a pretty good grade on the pantomime, and some other stuff like going up to the front of the class and showing emotions and responses.

VISUALIZE... I was a dancer for 15 years and I had chronic stage fright... My father always taught me to visualize myself doing my performance over and over in my head. This really helped me get over my fears. Not only did I perform better, I had the confidence that I was doing everything just the way I had envisioned. You wouldn't be doing this if you weren't passionate about it, would you?

It also really helped me to look beyond the audience at something in the back of the theater. That way, I was less aware of my audience.

Good Luck!

I've had several! At the bowling alley with some friends including a close female friend. I went to bowl but had ran in too fast, jumped onto the lane divider to avoid foot-fouling lost my blance and fell into the next lane right in front of someone who was about to bowl. The 3 lanes around me all turned and laughed, and my close friend still keeps mentioning it 6 months later :P

Hey, i do exactly the same thing, and let me tell you, picturing people in their underwear doesnt help. Sometimes i pretend i dont know them. Its always easier for me to perform in front of people you dont know, because you know they wont judge you. Annd even if you dont have confidence, pretend you do! If you portray the attitude of someone who happy with themselevs and their performance everyone will be sure to feel the same way! Good luck!!

The best way to get over embarassment in my opinion, is to give yourself positive self talk...say to yourself that you will do wonderful or you will try your best, and it will really boost your confidence and calm your nerves and it really works because I do this everytime I get ready to perform

Ask any performer, you have to get up in front of a group more often. The more you perform the more comfortable you'll become.
Practice, practice, practice.

Well if you're in a class, there's nothing to be embarrassed about. Your other classmates have to do it too, so it's an equal environment. Plus, you're not up there; it's your character.
