the cingular international plan is for you calling him. it costs like $5.00 for a discount price to call internationally. but even after the discount it costs like $1.20 per minute. i called and asked about this plan when my husband went over. he just bought a prepaid cell phone when he got there. also if he has a computer you might want to consider using the phone option in yahoo messenger. its clearer than voice chat and it saved us a lot of money.

I seriously doubt it. Cingular doesn't have towers in Iraq, therefore no service on a Cingular phone. My husband did have a cell phone for a bit his last tour in Iraq, but it was an Iraqi phone. He bought prepaid minutes and when they ran out I called him from our home phone. (Vonage has the best international rates I could find, by the way. I only paid 33 cents a minute or so. My Cingular cell phone cost about $2+ to call his Iraqi cell phone.)

That is interesting but I am going to say no. Here is why. Before I left Kuwait for Iraq in one of the things I had to leave was my cellphones. Now soldiers had cellphones, but they were purchased there in Iraq. If I remember correctly they were the variety that involved paying for minutes.
Now, some civilian contractors and certain Army personnel (myself included) did have satellite phones, but these were suppose to be for official use only.
remember I was at Camp Victory and that was 04/05. Things may have changed since then. Before buying any phone or plan though I would have your boyfriend check with his command on their policy. Good luck.

It really depends what part of Iraq he is in and what branch of the military. Some commanding officers won't let you turn it on because of the gps that is in the phone ( they don't want their location known). My son went on patrol for 21 days straight now what good would that of done to have a cell phone. But at his location they had a sat phone and it worked real well..

I am not sure about now but I do know that when my boyfriend was there last year he had to purchase a cell phone over there and use that to receive calls from me. I had to purchase calling cards to call his cell phone that he had purchased. I heard that if they use their own cell phones from here such as cingualr ir cost alot of money and like double air time. But they may have changed since then and have a plan for overseas. Good luck!! Your soldier is in my prayers!!
