While "Mandingo" suggested that Southern slave owners selectively bred slaves for strength, there is NO evidence anyone actually did. The simple fact is that slavery didn't exist in the U.S., or in England, long enough for that to happen. The nutcase author of the book next wrote a book about selective animal breeding, so that's where he was coming from.
What is really happening here is selective perception. You merely NOTICE when a tall person is black (instead of white.) Start noticing other darker-skinned folk and you'll quickly see that most of them are around the average American height of 5'9" (like yours truly!) Now, is you're 4'8", that would explain much.
