The 4 refitted ships of the Iowa Class (all now Decommed, USS Missouri now a Museum moored next to the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor)
IN their day the Iowa class Battleship was one the most powerful warships built. the only Battleships greater were the IJN Battleships Musashi and Yamato. A third hull was converted mid construction from a Battleship to a Carrier IJN Shinano and was sunk before completion by a US Sub in Tokyo Harbor. And to Devilduck74 above me. the Yamato class had 18" Main guns. Not 19" (actually I think they were 18.2" to be exact)
The 4 Iowa Battleships (Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri, Wisconsin) fought in WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Cold War, and Desert Storm.
In their later incarnations after upgrading, the Battleship retained their huge guns and heavy armor. coupled with Mk-15 Phalanx CIWS guns and Harpoon and Tomahawk Missiles made the Iowa far more than any modern ship or group of ships could handle.
Modern warships do not have the heavy steel armor of the old dreadnoughts.
No Modern Guns and few Missiles can penetrate the 16" Steel Armor . No Modern ship could hope to survive even one or 2 hits by the 16" main battery Naval Rifles of the Battleships.
For those who mentioned the Bismark and other battleships, the question was of ALL TIME.
Bismark was the most powerful in it's area. But the Iowa's which came along later in the war were much more powerful and after decades of upgraded long after WW2 would have blown away the Bismark or any other ship without a second thought.

I would have to say the Iowa class, USA. Not because I am American. But because. They were some of the most modern heavily armored battleships of all time.
They did not carry massive 19in guns. But, they manuvered very well. And could bring a massive amount of firepower to bear.
3-Turrets: 16in 50 cal Mark 7s
That and by leyte gulf the fire control system of the ships was the best of the best. And the guns could out shoot even the Yamamto with its massive 19iners.

the best battleship of all time is no doubt the USS Missouri.
it saw the end of WWII, Korean War, the Gulf War.
it was equipt with the biggest guns of the era and later with cruise missiles and the most hightech equipment of the day.

Electronic Battleship!!! They already had the ships laid out... all you had to do was enter the codes. Plus it had gnarly sound effects.
