this is not a fairytale scenerio Renegade, these are two very common scenerios, one of which I have done many times.

No, but the person who works there that I ask for assistance had better speak English, because customer service does not involve frustration from trying to get my point across.

well let me give you a scenario.
You go to France for a honeymoon, vacation whatever. Are you going to speak French the entire time you are there? If you are with your spouse or friends you would more than likely speak English to each other. Should the French be offended??
No, if you are a visitor here for however long a time, you have a right to speak your native language.

Now let me answer your question so as not to just leave with another question.
No I would not be offended, I lived in a place were I was the foreigner and I know how it feels to be looked at funny when I was talking to my family. America is a melting pot and has been for many many years. As long as they have a legitimate reason for being here, I don't mind at all.

Hmmm Wal Mart...Well I do go to that store once in awhile,
it has really good prices on some things.I'm not a store snob(I wouldn't be caught dead in K-Mart) lol

It doesn't offend me in any way.
What does bother some people is the fact if someone is a cashier there and while they are checking you out, they are talking to another person in a foreign language.I speak Spanish and that doesn't bother me,but it bother older people.I don't get offended very easily .But that's just me .

No I'm not offend, if they where employee's I'd ask them to speak English in front of the customers, but anyone else, they have the right to speak any language they want at anyplace and time. that's the best thing about America. i live in California and I'm African-American, i have been teaching myself to speak Spanish because 85% of my customers are of Spanish decent, and English is a second language for them. I'm gonna teach myself to speak Hindu next.

Depends, do they work there, and is that the only language they speak?

Its the situation down at a walmart near my house, the majority (75%) of the employees that work there only speak in a Foreign language and then look at you like you slapped them in the face if you ask for help in English.

I feel that Everyone is entitled to speak their own language to their friends or family, as long as when the time comes if they need to ask for help, they can do it in English, or if they are being asked for help in English, they can reply in English.

No.America is a free country, people can speak whatever language they want.Especially at Walmart. I can understand where Renegade is coming from,my mom comes to my house complaining about this same scenario all the time.

No, unless that person is an employee and is supposed to be taking care of me and cannot communicate in English. That totally aggravates me. If you are going to work in a customer service capacity, speaking the language of the land is essential.

Anyway, you wouldn't catch me in WalMart regardless of the language spoken by anyone in there. I hate that place.

No, that doesn't offend me. (scenario 1 or 2 )

Only time I am offended is in a private setting and someone who can speak English decides to strike up a conversation in a different language that they and only a few others understand. I consider that bad manners and poor form. (and the etiquette professionals do agree that it is rude)

Who cares? I am no more offended than if two people are speaking English in Paris or Frankfort for that matter.

If I were in a Walmart in America and I was not able to get any service from someone who spoke English, then and only then would it be a problem with me.

No. I've travelled all over the world. Americans speak English to one another when visiting foreign lands. Should that offend the people of the countries they are visiting? Why would it be any different the other way around.

One thing I can tell you for sure: more people from other countries can speak English, than Americans can speak their tongues. What does that say about us as a nation?

It never offends me. I have often been that American speaking another language. A variety of languages shouldn't offend anyone, welcome to the global community where there are hundreds of languages.
